Restaurants in Monastir
There is plenty of choice of cuisine in Monastir and traditional Tunisian cuisine is a complete mix of European, oriental and local ingredients, as it has been ruled by so many nationalities in the past. The Tunisian speciality is couscous, semolina grains with vegetables, spices, meat or fish and it can be found in many of the local restaurants. Scattered throughout the resort and near to most of the hotels you will find a selection of restaurants that will serve either traditional Tunisian cuisine or international dishes, so there is something for everyone to enjoy! Most hotels also have their own restaurants and snack bars open throughout the day and night and meals are usually served in a buffet style.
Night Life in Monastir
There are a few bars and discos in Monastir but most of the nightlife is hotel based. Most hotels will provide evening entertainment including live shows, games and competitions. As it gets later, the hotels that have their own discos begin to liven up and people jump from hotel to hotel to see where the best fun can be had! For a really lively night out, most people head to Sousse, where you will find numerous clubs, bars and discos that are open until quite late at night. Sousse is just a short distance away and a taxi there and back is relatively cheap! Although Tunisia is a Muslim country, alcohol is still easily available.
Activities in Monastir
The beach is a popular attraction in Monastir and most families and visitors tend to spend their time there, soaking up the sun and splashing around in the sparkling sea. If the beach doesn’t appeal to you there are many places of interest that you might like to see, such as the impressive eight-century stone Ribat (a fortified Monastery). The Ribat is now home to a small museum of Islamic arts and there are many things to see. The Bourguiba family museum is also another site of interest as it is where Tunisia’s first president after independence is buried and it is adorned with brilliant golden domes. Monastir is a great location for resort hopping and a trip to Sousse, the Sahara desert or Hammamet are also popular excursions. With so much to see and do, a holiday in Monastir will never be dull!
